Course Outline 

All students will be given the opportunity to carry out a wide range of investigative work including guidance in using advanced level laboratory techniques (e.g. culturing bacteria using aseptic techniques). You will be involved in discussions, practical investigations and exercises to ensure that you are well prepared for your examinations. There is no coursework on this course. However, your performance during practical work will be assessed. The course itself is comprised of 4 main sections: 

Content covered in year 12: 

• Biological molecules. 

• Cells. 

• Organisms exchange substances with their environment. 

• Genetic information, variation, and relationships between organisms. 

Assessment (A Level): 

Paper 1: 2 hour written examination (35% of the A Level) 

Paper 2: 2 hour written examination (35% of the A Level) 

Paper 3: 2 hour written examination (30% of the A Level) 

Into the future… 

The A Level course has been developed to develop enquiring minds. A Level Biology is very popular and a large part of this stems from its relevance to everyday life. This course is not for the squeamish but it will definitely open your eyes to what is both around and within us!
