CURRICULUM INTENT STATEMENT

Physical Education at Lilian Baylis School supports the school’s focus on healthy living. This enables students to be in touch with their social, mental and physical well-being and for them to be equipped with the tools to recognise areas for development when it comes to maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle.

We do this through the acquisition of skills, teaching and promotion of sportsmanship which marries in with our 5 school values of ASPIRATION, RESILIENCE, RESPONSIBILITY, ACHIEVEMENT and RESPECT. Furthermore, we offer a broad range of activities that promotes a long lasting love of sport and physical activity. We pride ourselves on our anti racist and anti sexist ethos which is championed within the PE department.

KEY STAGE THREE OVERVIEW

The KS3 Curriculum aligns with the schools ethos of inclusive teaching styles that also stretches and challenges our students. Students can look forward to a broad and balanced curriculum that exposes students to both individual and team sports that they may not have had the opportunity to try in KS2. We aim to equip students with transferable skills that build confidence when trying new sports and open pathways to extra – curricular provision as well as signposting students to local clubs. At the end of KS3 students will hope to have developed their communication, physical literacy and be able to appreciate winning, losing and the feeling of accomplishment when contributing to a team or individual performance.

KEY STAGE 4 OVERVIEW

The KS4 core curriculum is centered around developing students’ ability to solve problems and continue to promote a love of sport. We are fully aware of the importance (especially post COVID) of keeping students active and as such we provide opportunity for student agency in deciding what activities they would like to see on their curriculum. Students continue to make links between sport and physical/ mental well-being and are given more roles as leaders and coaches to improve their analysis and evaluative skills. These skills link directly to BTEC Level 2 Award in Sport which is an option in KS4, which can then be taken as a Level 3 course in our very own Sixth Form. It is important to note here that our grades in BTEC Sport, both at Level 2 and 3, compete with the very best in the country year on year.
