Behaviour, Attendance & Welfare

Back

We recognise that all behaviour is a form of communication and thus we aim to support both students and staff in improving these communication skills, so they are better heard and understood. We also believe that the key to building a strong community for success is to develop and establish positive relationships, amongst student peers, staff colleagues and between staff and students.

Our Relationships & Communication Policy, or ‘The LBTS Way’, places significant emphasis on the role of high expectations for student behaviour, which are first and foremost modelled by staff. ‘The LBTS Way’ always begins with skillful communication and positive behaviour through the use of rewards, creating and reinforcing a culture of positivity around expected behaviours. When these expectations are not met, we aim to promptly address them as key learning points, ensuring positive progress, both academic and personal, remains at the forefront of everything we do.

At LBTS we believe that all members of the school community, students, staff, parents and governors, should:

  • Build supportive relationships with each other

  • Develop communication skills so that we better understand and support each other

  • Have high expectations for ourselves and others, so that all students can achieve their best

  • Role model, recognise, encourage, reward and celebrate positive contributions to our community

  • Consistently and fairly apply sanctions, ensuring the code of  conduct  is  maintained for the good of all members of the school community

  • Be cognizant of barriers that others may face as a results of protected characteristics, including gender, race, religion, neurodiversity, disability and sexuality, amongst others, and be active upstanders and allies for them

  • Uphold the school values of:

Be kind to others and yourself

       Be your best

       Take care of our community

LBTS Code of Conduct

The LBTS Code of Conduct is designed for the wellbeing of all. We have 3 simple rules in our Code of Conduct that ensure we create an environment where all members of the school community feel safe and are able to achieve their very best.

The Code of Conduct applies in school, journeys to and from school, and on school visits, as students remain representatives of LBTS and our values at all times.

Our 3 school rules:

Be kind to others and yourself

Be your best

Take care of our community

Each rule covers a range of areas, which are expanded upon below:

1. Be kind to others and yourself

It follows that students should:

  • Be mindful of the personal space of others, including keeping hands / feet to yourself

  • Speak kindly to others, both students and staff. This includes speaking in person and during online activities

  • Not take part in any activity that could be described as bullying (e.g. hurting, name calling, ganging up on another). This is completely unacceptable

  • Understand barriers that others may face as a result of protected characteristics, including gender, race, religion, neurodiversity, sexuality and disability, amongst others. Be upstanders and allies for them

  • Not bring valuable items into school, since this poses a risk that you will lose them and be very upset!

  • Seek out help when you need it, both in class and out of class, by speaking to a trusted adult

  • Always aim to do your very best, so that you will achieve your full potential

2. Be Your Best

It follows that students should:

  • Walk with purpose between lessons, so you arrive on time

  • Sit in allocated an space according to the Seating Plan, so you are in the best space for learning

  • Follow the START routine when entering class, so you focus straight away

  • Actively engage in all learning activities

  • Do their best in all classwork and Home Learning

  • Follow the Levels for Learning during all lesson activities

  • Bring the correct equipment for all lessons in your LBTS bag

  • Use any ICT resources as directed by the teacher, and never in an inappropriate way

  • Use any Time Out, Toilet or Period Passes appropriately

  • Not bring smartphones or smart devices onto school property - these must be handed in at reception upon arrival at school

3. Take care of our community

It follows that students should:

  • Be excellent representatives of LBTS during the school day, including dressing smartly in full school uniform

  • Be excellent representatives of LBTS on the way to and from school, ensuring they are active citizens who show respect to our local community

  • Ensure all litter is placed in the bins provided

  • Only eat and drink in the canteen and food room, so as to maintain good building hygiene (only water can be drunk in other parts of the building)

  • Not bring in articles which could be dangerous, such as matches, lighters, etc. Anything which could be described as a weapon must not be brought to school.

  • Never take anyone else's property without first having asked and gained their permission

  • Keep the building clean from graffiti and litter

  • Ensure they are careful in the use of equipment, including ICT resources, to ensure it is not damaged

  • Follow the LBTS routines for Assembly, Corridors and during break / lunchtime to keep EVERYONE safe. These are:

Assembly

  • Students must enter the Assembly Hall quietly to maintain the learning atmosphere that we are keen to uphold in all spaces in our school

  • Students should remain standing quietly until invited to say the school motto alongside peers

  • Students should not sit on the back row of the assembly hall

  • Students should engage with the assembly content and answer questions when asked by the assembly host

  • Students should respond respectfully to the host and ensure they feel supported and welcomed

  • Students should applaud their peers when they receive praise and/or an award

  • Your tutor will sit alongside you and encourage you to participate in any activities. They will also remind you of the expectations

  • When assembly is finished, you will be dismissed in an orderly manner (1 row at a time)

Corridors

  • Staff and students recognise that once they enter the building, they are entering a learning environment and so all behaviour should help foster this purposeful environment

  • The One Way system should be followed at all times: Students and staff should walk in an anti clockwise fashion around the school

  • Students should walk purposefully towards their next lesson. It is not acceptable for students to run and/or play games in the corridors

  • Students are expected to move around the building quietly during lesson time (Level 1 unless talking to a member of staff)

  • When in the building, students must have any outdoor clothing removed and must wear their blazers

Break and Lunchtime: Building and Playground

  • Students are expected to remain in their designated playground area

  • Each area has equipment that students are allowed to use. Students are responsible for taking and placing the equipment back in the trunk.

  • It is expected that playground duty staff should facilitate students in packing away the equipment

  • Staff will put on clubs at lunchtime to promote students having meaningful, structured, purposeful play

  • To reward students, there will be opportunities for selected students to spend lunchtime at the local park(s)

  • Students should engage in appropriate and safe play at break and lunchtime. Playfighting and “tag” games are not allowed

Learning Support

  • All students are welcome in Learning Support if they need a quiet space during lunch and break times. However, students must follow school expectations on behaviour in order to keep it a safe, supportive and reflective space.

  • During lesson times or during morning registration, students scheduled for interventions or appointments will be collected by a member of the Learning Support Team from registration. Sessions last between 20 minutes to 75 minutes and students will be escorted back to their lesson at the end of their session.

  • Students who require a movement break will be collected by a member of staff at a scheduled time for a sensory integration activity.

  • During interventions and at Home Learning clubs students will follow good behaviour for learning, including listening and following instructions, engaging and participating.

  • All students who use Learning Support must be involved in meaningful activity and must have permission to be there.
