Course Outline

This course enables students to develop knowledge and understanding of Human Biology through a practical approach to learning. It is an Extended Certificate equivalent to 1 A Level.
A broad basis of study for the health science sector. Designed to support progression to higher education when taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels. The mandatory content allows learners to concentrate on the development of their knowledge and understanding as well as essential practical and research skills relevant in applied human biology and health science areas, over an extended period.

Units include:

Principles of Applied Human Biology
Practical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases
Human Biology & Health Issues

And a selection of one of the following units:

Functional Physiology
Diseases, Disorders, Treatments and Therapies
Genetics and Genetic Engineering
Biomedical Science
Human Reproduction & Fertility


Assessment is ongoing throughout the two years and includes assignments, presentations and other portfolio based evidence, as well as externally assessed units.

Into the future…

This qualification prepares students for a wide range of careers including health care, scientific research, cosmetics, food and drink, physical science and engineering. The qualification can be used to progress to medically related degree courses such as Forensic Science, Biomedical Science, Pharmacy, Optometry, Radiography and Nursing.
