The Lilian Baylis Penathlon team triumphed again in the South London competition held at Southfields College. The team romped to victory in table cricket, Boccia, polybat, javelin, long jump, precision bean bag and all track events. Well done Lilian Baylis!

On Tuesday 1 March the 124 students who chose LBTS received their offer of a place letter from Lambeth Council. As in previous years the school was over subscribed and the 124 places were allocated to siblings, those with special needs, looked after children and those that live closest. The Governors remain committed to LBTS being a local school for local children without any admission test.

Visit to Bernardo Passos School in São Brás de Alportel (Portugal)

Transplanted Classes is a project funded by the Portuguese government, which aims to bring Portuguese speaking students closer to their cultural background. Under this programme, nine of our year 8 and 9 students were wonderfully welcomed by the Bernado Passos School, in São Brás de Alportel (South of Portugal).

LBTS students had the opportunity to have lessons in a Portuguese school and understand the differences not only between countries, but also between educational systems. The most obvious one is the lack of uniform.

The relationship with the teachers is also different, according to one LBTS student who said that teachers in Portugal were less strict in terms of the class presentation and behaviour. However, in Bernardo Passos School students have an important reason to keep focused, which is to avoid the risk of having to repeat the same year if their results are unsatisfactory.

In Algarve, they also visited the magnificent natural park of Ria Formosa where hundreds of different birds stop by during the spring and autumn migratory periods. They had a taste of the old Portugal at the museum of costume, and a glance at the modern Portugal, when they watched the filming of Portugal’s Got Talent TV show, at Faro municipal theatre.

On their return, our students shared their observations by preparing a display exhibiting pictures of the best moments of this trip and highlighting what they learned from this unique experience. This display can be seen in the staff room corridor.

The Love Factor

LBTS celebrated St Valentines Day with its traditional 'Love Factor' talent concert. Students from all year groups performed a range of love themed songs as part of the concert.

Two of our students performed live alongside professional poets and rappers at the West End New Players Theatre. The Slambassadors UK event was organised by the Poetry Society in order to talent-scout young poets and performers around the country

Science Club

Science Club

The science club is designed to encourage pupils to enjoy and understand science and engineering. In the past members have gone on various trips and have visited colleges where science, maths and engineering are studied to post graduate level.

The club has presently been using new chemistry kits to promote chemical engineering. We hope that members will pursue their love of science and engineering into their later years.

We are pleased to announce the launch of our online Parent Portal. This will allow parents access important information about their child’s progress at school. The information will include day to day attendance, behaviour and the latest assessment grades. Password will be given to parents on RAG DAY.

When you meet your child’s tutor at RAG day in February you will be given a unique username and password which will give you secure access to all this information. Some key features of this system are listed below:

Secure - all data is secure and encrypted to prevent unauthorised access.
Parent Login - you will have a unique username and password to access the system.
Child’s Personal Details - you are able to view, and request updates to, your children’s personal details including name, address, DOB, gender and form details. Attendance - you can access near real time information on your child’s attendance at school. You will be able to see your child’s attendance at both morning and afternoon registration each day of the week.
Timetable - you are able to view your child’s timetable information from within the Parent Portal.
Assessment – the very latest assessment grades are available so you can keep up-to-date with your child’s progress.
Behaviour – detail of any behaviour issues are stored so you can know how well your child behaves at school.

icarus project

Students from Years 7, 8 and 9 have recently started an exciting project with the Southbank Centre. Students are working with a professional composer and members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to write a piece of music to be set to video (which is being created by our students). This will then be shown at the Royal Festival Hall as part of the performance of 'Icarus at the Edge of Time'.

Winter Concert

We tried something different for this year’s Winter Concert and hosted a series of intimate performances in our new 'yurt' tent. There were excellent performances from students throughout the school and a fantastic time was had by all involved.

Remembrance Day

At 11am on 11 November the whole school fell silent for 2 minutes whilst the students and staff remembered all of those who have died in war. Students also attended a Remembrance Day assembly this week to hear a presentation from students about Remembrance Day.

Sir Ian McKellen recently visited LBTS to talk about his life. He spoke honestly about his work as an actor and for Stonewall which is a charity which fights for equal rights for gay, lesbian and bisexual people.

LBTS STARTS MANDARIN LESSONS

As part of our commitment to languages LBTS has introduced Mandarin into Y7 and Y8. We already teach GCSE Portuguese and GCSE French and next year we hope to introduce a 4th language. In addition students are able to get support for any language they speak at home in order to obtain a GCSE. Last year our students obtained GCSEs in Swedish, German, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Mandarin, Polish and Bengali. Students were also able to gain a national ASSET qualification in Somali.

Year 7 Football

The Y7 football team were unlucky to lose to London Nautical in the London Cup last week. Our boys were great ambassadors for LBTS and we were very proud of them. We may have lost to London Nautical in the cup but we finished above them in the league in 2008/9 and 2009/10!
