Lilian Baylis Technology School has just been graded as outstanding in all aspects by OfSTED. The report details how the school has been graded as outstanding for achievement, teaching, behaviour and leadership. No other secondary school in Lambeth has achieved this and Lilian Baylis Technology School is one of only 2 schools in London to achieve this since the new harder Ofsted inspection process was introduced in September 2012.

  • YEAR 7 MEET THEIR NAMESAKE

    Each year at LBTS we name our tutor groups after people who have made a significant contribution to mankind. Recently 7 Blackman were lucky enough to meet Malorie Blackman, the children's writer after whom they are named. Malorie Blackman also talked to Year 9 about her writing and about never giving up hope. This was because her work was only published after it had been rejected 82 times by publishers!

  • LBTS at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

    Maryam, Ladan and Salad from Years 9 and 10 recently visited the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to read some of their acclaimed poetry to a large audience. Their poetry was met with rapturous applause from a very discerning crowd and the students were complimented on the maturity and humanity evident in their work.

  • Inspired a Generation

    On 30 April our PE gifted and talented students attended a debate on whether the Olympic Games had 'inspired a generation.' Students heard from members of the Olympic Games Organising Committee including Olympic gold medalist and triple jump world record holder Jonathan Edwards and 5 time Paralympian and multi-medalist Dame Tanni-Grey Thompson.

  • Inspirational Presentation by Squash Falconer

    The Worshipful Company of Information Technologists (WCIT) are a city livery company that has supported LBTS for a number of years. Recently WCIT launced a programme of external speakers at LBTS to motivate and inspire our students. The first speaker was Squash Falconer, who has, among many amazing achievements, climbed Mount Everest, and was the first British woman to paraglide from the top of Europe’s highest mountain, Mont Blanc. Squash’s messages for our students were:


    1. Always try your hardest, because you never know what you will be able to achieve;
    2. Always take your love and passion with you;
    3. Don’t listen to people if they tell you that you can’t achieve something; and
    4. Have a positive outlook and get the basic things right – “if your knickers are right, everything goes right!”
  • Into University Media in Focus Programme

    During the recent vacation a number of LBTS students participated in the Media in Focus week organised by Into University. During the week students studied various aspects of the media industry and visited BBC Radio One Extra, the Guardian newspaper and the Roundhouse in Camden.

  • Cooking Challenge

    The Year 7 Cooking Club recently held a challenge to see who could bake the best cupcakes with decorations in. The winners won house points and a £5 book voucher.

  • Lord Alton visits LBTS

    On 13 March Lord Alton visited LBTS and spoke to Y12. He spoke about his career in politics, being the youngest MP to enter the Commons in 1979 and becoming a member of the House of Lords in 1997. He also spoke to our students about his work campaigning for international Human Rights. Y12 were challenged to think about the changes they are capable of bringing about in themselves, their communities, the UK and even the whole world!

  • Lambeth Phoenix Book Award and World Book Day 2013

    LBTS celebrated World Book Day with the Phoenix Book Award. Students voted for the best new book at an event at Clapham Library. Year 8 students also had the opportunity to meet the authors Chris Riddel and Paul Stewart.

  • Penathlon final

    On Wednesday 6 March Lambeth competed in the Penathlon final. Lambeth came 3rd with the Lilian Baylis team members picking up 6 gold medals.

  • MEDICAL SCHOOL

    On Tuesday 5 March, Y9 students spent the day at St Thomas' Hospital to finding out what it is like to work in the health service. This was the second of a two day course where students were taught the importance of communication skills, basic life support and how to perform basic medical procedures indcluding taking blood, putting in a drip and suturing wounds.

  • CAREERS ADVISOR

    Rebecca Cashmore is our new Careers Advisor and is based at LBTS for 3 days per week . Y11 have recently met her to write their action plan for next year whilst Y12 have started to look at their options in University.   • NATIONAL OFFER DAY

    Congratulations if you are one of the 124 Y6 pupils who today learnt you will be joining LBTS in September 2013. You will be joining the only secondary school in Lambeth to be rated outstanding by OfSTED in all areas. This means that achievement, teaching, behaviour and leadership of the school were all graded outstanding in our recent inspection.   • John Hegley

    John Hegley is one the most famous performance poets in the UK. On 27 February Y7 and Y9 students were treated to a 100 minute performance and poetry workshop with him as they had been studying his poetry in English. Here is one of John's comic poems called Relaxing with Taxidermy:

     

    When their chihuahua got stuffed
    they were really chuffed,
    no need to feed her
    or walkies on a lead her
    no more poop to scoop
    and doesn't she look smashing on the mantle piece?
    She'll always look at the camera now.
    I don't know why we bothered having her alive at all.
  • ICT refurbishment

    Over half term LBTS had its ICT rooms refurbished in order to provide a better environment for students in ICT.

  • DT Clocks

    In Y9 DT students have been designing and making clocks that reflect their identity. This is Kayden's clock.

  • UK Maths Challenge

    On 7 February our leading mathematicians from years 9, 10 and 11 took part in the UK Maths Challenge. The Maths Challenge pits the best young mathematicians in the UK against one another, testing their skills in problem solving and logic. Students from years 7 and 8 will be taking part in the Junior Challenge later in the year.

  • Cambridge University

    Year 12 student Zeynep Nas recently spent a week studying at Cambridge University. She was given a place after applying for the Cambridge University Gifted & Talented scheme. This was a huge achievement in itself as thousands of students across the UK applied for only a few places. Zeynep spent her week studying in Cambridge tutorials, attending Psychology lectures and even punting on the river!

  • NATIONAL STORYTELLING WEEK

    Throughout the week a number of story and poetry readings were organised across the school. A number of drama students, teachers and school governors entertained our students with their storytelling during registration and lunchtime.

  • Wyvil Gifted and Talented Computer Science Day

    LBTS students recently ran an ICT gifted and talented day at Wyvil Primary School. Pupils at Wyvil Primary School learnt how to use Kodu which is a game design program from Microsoft that allows users to create exciting and visually stimulating games using a process of programming blocks to carry out particular logical functions.

  • Arvon Celebration

    In December 15 of our students travelled to Devon to take part in a writing residential. Recently the students took part in an event to celebrate the amazing work they produced during the writing residential. On 30 January the students prepared lasagne, salad and carrot cake and then read their poetry to their family and friends.

    The Chief Executive of Arvon, Ruth Borthwick, called the students' poetry 'remarkable' and family and friends at the event were suitably impressed and proud.

  • Little Chef Cooking Challenge

    The Year 7 and 8 Cooking Club recently held a challenge to see who could bake the best biscuits in the time allocated. The ingredients had to be mixed, shaped, baked and then iced to perfection in 1 hour. The winning teams won house points and a £5 book voucher.

  • PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PORTUGUESE EMBASSY

    On Friday 25th January LBTS was honoured to receive a visit from His Excellency the Ambassador of Portugal. As part of his visit the Ambassador presented the school with a wide selection of Portuguese books, only a few of which are shown above, for the library.

  • Family Reading

    Parents and students recently attended a family reading event in the Library to inspire and support them help their child read for pleasure at home.

  • LBTS6 STUDENTS JOIN THE NATIONAL CITIZENS SERVICE (NCS)

    Y12 recently took part a the National Citizen Service activity and were challenged to create their own community social action projects. Student projects included teaching their peers about healthy eating and cost effective fashion 'Look Good, Feel Good which was voted the best social action project! In addition Zanya Lindsay received a special award or being the 'Most Improved' on the programme across London.

  • READATHON

    We are pleased to announce that our students raised £700 through the winter Readathon. All proceeds will be donated to our four house charities.

  • Visit to Goldsmiths College, London University

    7C recently visited Goldsmiths College, London Univeristy where they were able to experience a day in the life of a university student. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and learnt about what they would like to do in the future.
